When i was about 14 I jumped out of my sleep after what i thought was a woman getting beaten and murdered. This was mid spring. I rushed out of my bed to see what all the raucus was about. As i looked out the window I saw two raccooons moving faster than i ever saw raccoons move and they are usually very brave in our area. They were nose to tail like silver bullets. I looked up our steps on the little hill in our backyard and there it was a big reddish brown cougar. At first i thought it was the raccoon but remembered what cougars are supposed to sound like. This was in South Orange, NJ
